ALIR - Victorian England: A Cultural History

19th century England was a time of great social change, as landowning aristocrats were challenged by a rising industrial middle class, and working classes shifted from rural agriculture to urban factories. Shaped both by secular Utilitarianism and fervent Evangelicalism, the period’s contrasting belief systems combined to form the rigid “Victorian” moral code. We explore how art, architecture, literature and even sports reflect this intriguing, diverse world.
