King vs Parliament: The English Civil War (1642-1660)
In 1642, in resistance to King Charles I's efforts to establish royal absolutism, Parliament formed an army, led by the fervent Puritan Oliver Cromwell, to defend parliamentary liberties. After defeating the royalists and executing the King, Parliament attempted to rule without a monarch. The resulting chaos led to a Puritan dictatorship and then, in 1660, to the monarchy's restoration. We'll examine issues and key figures on both sides and reflect on this period's influence on English history up to the present day.
