England in the 1890s: The Age of Oscar Wilde
This course explores the revolt against "Victorianism" in late-19th century England. Throwing off the constraints of respectability and strict sexual control, this rebellion was epitomized by the deliberately outrageous Oscar Wilde. They key word of the 1890s was "New": the New Woman, the New hedonism, the New Art. Many Victorians condemned the age as decadent; others celebrated it as a New Beginning.
