Aikido for Self Defense and Fitness

Learn self-defense and improve coordination, flexibility and cardio-fitness while reducing stress. The gentle martial art of Aikido features holds and throws applied in a circular manner allowing you to protect yourself without violence. Learn while having fun in a relaxed, noncompetitive atmosphere. Dr. James Clark, MS, MPH, Sandan (3rd level black belt) has been teaching Aikido since 1974 and self-defense at UTSA for 20 years.

Alzheimer's and Dementia: Know the 10 Signs of Early Detection

Early detection of Alzheimer’s disease gives you a chance to begin drug therapy, enroll in clinical studies and plan for the future. This interactive workshop features moving video clips of people with Alzheimer’s disease encouraging early detection, early diagnosis and early intervention. Alzheimer's Disease: The Holidays and Caregiving

Holidays are a time for family togetherness and memories, but can also be a time filled with stress and sadness for the person with dementia and the caregiver. A person in the early stage of a dementia-related disease may experience a special sense of loss during the holidays because of the changes he or she is experiencing and the implications for the future. As the disease progresses, the physical changes at home, the shifts in usual routines and the increased activity and noises at this time of year can be upsetting and may lead to unusual behaviors or emotions. Caregivers may feel overwhelmed by caregiving responsibilities while continuing to maintain holiday traditions. This class will discuss the possible feelings of both the person with the disease, their caregiver, and tips for making the holidays easier. This workshop is presented by the Alzheimer's Association.

Our focus will be on exercises that build on your strength, endurance, mobility, and flexibility. Modified circuits will provide a comfortable yet challenging workout. Yoga for Seniors

Stretch, breathe and relax in this wonderful class designed specifically for seniors. You will strengthen your physical body, learn easy meditations and enjoy doing Kundalini Yoga with instructor Patty Blatchley. All postures are offered with modifications for your own individual needs and goals. You may sit in a chair or bring a cushion. Wear comfortable clothes. Bring a water bottle, yoga mat and blanket to each class.
