Growing Olives for Fun and/or Profit+
Texans are discovering olives both as a cash crop and as a low water-tolerant landscaping or pot plant. Sandy Winoker, owner of the Sandy Oaks Olive Orchard in Elmendorf, will conduct a tour of her olive orchard and discuss the different varieties of olive trees and their needs. She will cover propagation and fertilizing, as well as how to set up an olive grove. Bring a picnic if you wish to eat afterwards in the grove. Sandy Oaks Olive Orchard is 20 miles south of San Antonio. Take I.H. 37 South and exit at Hardy Rd. (exit 120). Turn left on Hardy Rd. and go 1/4 mile. Turn left on Mathis and go 1/4 mile to a gate that says "Sandy Oaks."
